Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline which originated in India and is now widely practiced across the globe. Despite of Yoga´s popularity as a system of physical exercise (asanas) across the Western world, Yoga – in Indian traditions – more than a physical exercise, it has a meditative and spiritual core.
Everybody can do Yoga!
Sometimes I hear people say that they think they can’t do Yoga, because they’re too old, too stiff or not in good shape. But really Yoga is for everybody! Yoga meets you where you are today (your physical and emotional and spiritual condition) and can be started at any stage in life. Yoga is not about being perfect or doing crazy asanas (body positions) or some cult or religion. Yoga is about connecting your mind and your body through breath awareness and movements and embrace the present moment.
The aim of the yoga practice …
ist to be in and honor the present moment, to become centered in the now, to calm your body and mind, to strengthen the body, to increase your awareness & flexibility, to open your heart and get in touch with your true self (soulnature) and to experience oneness, more joy & peace in/throughout your day. It acknowledges where you are today and takes you one step further on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual plane.
Gentle Vinyasa Yoga
In gentle Vinyasa Yoga, every movement is synchronized and connected to the breath. It is also called flow yoga, because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. The breath acts as an anchor to the movement as you flow from one pose to the next in time with an inhale or an exhale. The gentle Vinyasa Yoga practice weaves in asanas (body poses), pranayama (conscious breathing), mudras (hand positions), meditation and visualization. Classes may also include mantras (sacred sounds) and a reading of quotes and / or teachings from classical yogic or other spiritual texts to deepen the practice.
Yin Yoga is a meditative type, slow paced long hold yoga that creates space in the joints and promotes relaxation in the entire body. It uses mostly seated poses and enhances flexibility and stillness of body, mind and breath. In Yin Yoga the tissues get stressed which is important for tissue health. In Yin-Yoga we challenge ourselves to a slight discomfort in a pose and dive into our interior world. Yin-Yoga classes may also include mantras (sacred sound), reading of quotes and spiritual texts. Everybody can do Yin-Yoga.
Yoga as a life style
Once we embrace the yogic point of view and attitude towards life and what happens in our lives, and integrate the yogic state of increased awareness into our lives, yoga becomes a way of living and a lifestyle in the way we relate to ourselves and the world.
